LEARNING

We integrate our enriching teaching philosophies into your child’s day, and each of our classrooms implements these plans and programs on a daily basis!

Montessori Teaching Method

Our Centre was built upon various educational philosophies and we incorporated the Montessori method within our distinctive system as we believe it offers unique benefits for your child’s development. After nearly 25 years of working with children, we know that they are innately inquisitive and drawn to learning new things. This is why we value each child’s individuality and treat each student according to their unique interests and rate of social, cognitive and physical development.

In line with Montessori school philosophy, we provide children in the York Region with a friendly, loving and nurturing environment focused on comfort, cooperation and education. This means each child has the freedom to choose the activities that they feel comfortable with and educators encourage a hands-on approach to learning. We believe education should evoke communication and we value listening and respecting children’s needs and interests.

In adopting the Montessori school approach in our childcare, we have developed a method for inspiring learning amongst children that emphasizes allowing each child to take charge of their education and discover the joy of learning through exploration, interaction and independence. When children have the freedom to choose what activities they take part in, they are more engaged and excited about learning new things.

The Montessori Approach

We believe that the early years of a child’s life are the stepping-stones that lead to a successful, happy and healthy life and each one of the moments of childhood matter. That’s why we carefully tailor our curriculum to foster growth and work to cultivate curiosity, creativity and intelligence among our students.

Through tutoring, early assessment and intervention services, extracurricular activities and ensuring three teachers are assigned to each classroom, we make sure each child has the resources and support necessary to succeed.

Reggio Teaching Method

We believe that children work best when they are given the opportunity to explore and learn at their own pace. Our centre is built to encourage students to engage with their environment using the various materials around the room.

The Reggio approach believes that children are capable of directing their own interests and that they work best while in a collaborative environment where they can explore their own curiosity. Our teachers offer students a supportive and educational classroom where they are able to work in small groups throughout the day while exploring “the 100 languages of the child”.

The 100 languages encourage creativity and a love of learning through the following practices; drawing, moulding, dramatic play, writing, and painting etc. They are used to represent children’s thinking around a topic or an experience.

Play-Based Teaching Method

Curiosity about the world comes naturally to children, and through play, they can actively explore the environment and the world around them.

Some ways children learn through play include:

• Exploring ideas and language

• Manipulating objects

• Acting out roles

• Experimenting with materials (blocks, natural items, slime, paint and playdough)

• Different types of pedagogical play such as modelled play, open-ended play and purposeful framed play provide opportunities for young children to develop knowledge through experience.

Play-based learning is important in developing inquisitive young learners as it helps them discover and solve problems in playful and unique ways. A classroom is a social space which is much more than the physical space.

Our classroom environment is designed to invite, provoke and enhance learning as well as encourage communication, collaboration and inquiry. The play-based teaching takes the “inquiry stance” on practice by allowing students to answer the “why” that comes naturally to them. The child, the teacher and the environment are all three crucial elements in making learning through inquiry happen.

OUR PROGRAMS

Infants

Our infant program introduces young children to childcare and makes the transition into education seamless and positive!

Our nurturing caregivers develop trusting relationships with each child and family to ensure a comfortable transition into the education centre centre. During the day, the infants will engage in many activities such as art, tummy time, circle time, storytime, social development, music and outdoor play.

Toddlers

Our toddler child care program offers a more structured group environment with a schedule that includes plenty of stimulating indoor and outdoor experiences.

A balance of structured and free play opportunities is used to facilitate a child’s independence throughout their daily routines. Children are given the chance to play, learn and explore independently, in small groups with friends, or as part of a larger group.

Toddlers are also introduced to our academic program through Theme Based, Montessori, Play-Based, Reggio Project learning styles; all of which include math, language, early printing and project work which are provided age-appropriately and tailored to individual abilities. The goal of this program is to help students have a healthy and smooth transition from home to school.

Pre-School

The goals of the preschool program begin with the desire to provide a safe, educationally and socially enriching environment in which children can learn to be self-confident away from home.

The program seeks to stimulate the child’s curiosity and encourage well-rounded growth for all children based on their individual levels of development. Using various curriculum models – Montessori, Play-Based, and Reggio Approach – children get the chance to be involved in a variety of activities that foster their love of learning and discovery! Some elements of the program are more structured, and some depend on the choice of the child which offers an excellent introduction to self-guided learning.

The preschool program concentrates on developing the child’s academic skills with a variety of activities. Through group and individual project work, the students will expand their skills in mathematics, science, social skills, music, visual arts, drama and language. Daily routines will be provided to the child and teach him/her to apply these skills to reading, writing, and basic mathematics.

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten program offers a more formal classroom setting that is focused around structured, self-guided discovery.

With an enriched curriculum and innovative program plans built around Ontario Ministry guidelines, the program offers exciting opportunities for exploring and learning. Children are exposed to a variety of age-appropriate topics, including Language, Arts, History, Geography, Visual Arts, Music, Mathematics, Science, French, and Physical Education. Field trips are designed to support their understanding of topics that have been introduced to them; exposing music, art, science in real life is a great way to bring a fresh perspective to their classroom learning environment.

Our Kindergarten program is designed to help prepare children for the daily and annual routine of grade one and helps show them what to expect in their first year of school. Children will have their own personal work booklets and personal pencil case as this will help teach them responsibility and organization of their own personal workspace. At this point they will also receive homework once a week and at the end of the year children will receive a report card from their teachers.
